Meno a Kwena Camp - Kalahari Desert - Botswana |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Meno a Kwena (Tooth of the Crocodile), offers a traditionally classic tented camp experience, and where each of the seven tents is ideally situated to take in the breathtaking view over the dry Boteti Riverbed and the neighbouring Makgadikgadi National Park. The view from the entire camp high up on white cliffs forms the centrepiece of the Meno A Kwena experience. A waterhole is maintained by the camp to sustain the myriad species that call the area their home. The wildebeest and zebra migration concentrates along the Boteti during the dry season (May to November), where small pools are the only surface water available to them. Resident and nomadic wildlife includes the lion, impala, kudu, warthog, jackal, and occasionally wild dog, elephant and giraffe. The bird life is excellent along the riverine woodlands of acacia, lead wood and terminalia. The main area is also tented, and comprises the lounge area, library, bar and kitchen - from where delicious traditional safari meals are prepared. Meals are cooked on the campfire by the chef, and prepared specially for the BBQ and ‘tin box oven’, adding to guests’ authentic safari experience. Fully serviced accommodation is in mini meru walk-in tents. Comfortable twin or double bedrolls are made up with fresh cotton linen and traditional camping blankets. Each tent is equipped with its own bucket shower and toilet. It is quite an experience standing under an open Kalahari sky filled with stars or alive with the traffic of riverine birds – depending on the time of day you choose to have your shower! Meno A Kwena strives to deliver the authentic, and original safari experience. Activities include: Nature walks – all year round - are a fascinating feature that focuses on the signs and tracks of wildlife, the plants, birds and insects that play a
important role in the lives and behaviour of the larger wildlife species. The guides are specialists at
locating and explaining every detail and how they fit into the circle of life of nature. Day safaris from camp – Licensed, experienced, and knowledgeable guides lead the safari car day trips into Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans National Parks all year round. An
impressive packed picnic lunch and drinks are provided for these safaris.
Day trips are dependant on wildlife movements, influenced by the rains, and limited available surface water. Depending on the water that flows into the Boteti between Maun and camp we will offer canoe trips where farmers water their cattle and fishermen gather for the day!s catch A recent addition to wildlife viewing at camp is in the form of a traditionally constructed hide built with reeds and thatch with shade netting screens. The cliff hide brings guests overwhelmingly close to the wildlife in and on the shore of the river. Guests don!t just watch the elephants and other animals from the hide, they experience them as they drink, and the elephants swimming for hours and have mud and dust baths. The hide
experience is as exciting as any game drive and so is considered an activity well worth every second sitting quietly as the wildlife behaves naturally and unaware of this presence.
