Nxai Pan Camp - Kalahari Desert - Botswana

Nxai Pan Camp

Nxai Pan Camp - brand new, just opened in February 2009 - is situated in the south western section of the National Park, and overlooks a waterhole at the edge of Nxai Pan itself. A protected area since the 1970’s, Nxai Pan National Park and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park were effectively joined in 1992. This new area is some 7 500 square kilometres in extent, and encompasses the famous Ntwetwe Pans, Nxai Pan, Baines Baobabs, and Kudiakam Pan. The Pan itself is a fossilised lakebed some 40 square kilometres in size. The landscape is largely covered by grassland and dotted with clusters of umbrella acacia trees and mopane woodland in the north.

Accommodation at the Camp is in 7 custom-designed en suite luxury desert units, with an additional en suite family unit, with 2 bedrooms.

The main Lodge area is home to the dining room, lounge, viewing deck, and library. There is also an adjacent swimming pool.

Activities are varied, and include a unique fossil pans interpretation, game drives (with a maximum of only 6 guests per vehicle), guided walks, evening drives, and day trips to the famous Baines’ Baobabs. All activities are guided, and have an accompanying tracker.

Nxai Pan is known for its large populations of both springbok and oryx, and is also the only natural environment where one can see impala and springbok living together. Once the summer rains have begun (late November to March) migratory species such as zebra and wildebeest begin to move to the Nxai Pan area in their thousands. In addition, hundreds of elephants make their way to the area from the Chobe and Okavango to feed. These large herds attract predator species, including lion, cheetah, wild dog, leopard, spotted hyena, and the more elusive brown hyena.

This is a unique area, with breathtaking night skies, diverse species of birds, and reptiles, and enjoys two distinct migratory seasons.
